What to Do If I Have a Blocked Sink?

What to Do If I Have a Blocked Sink?

A blocked sink can be a common household issue that disrupts your daily routine. Fortunately, many sink blockages can be resolved with some basic troubleshooting steps.

What You Can Do If You Have a Blocked Sink

1. Identify the Cause
  1. Common CausesBlocked sinks are often caused by a build-up of grease, food particles, hair, soap scum, or other debris in the pipes. Identifying the cause can help you choose the most effective method to clear the blockage.

2. Remove Any Visible Blockages
  1. Clear the Sink: Remove any standing water and visible debris from the sink. Use a cup or small container to bail out the water if necessary.
  2. Check the Drain: Look into the drain to see if you can spot the blockage. If you can see the blockage, try to remove it with your fingers or a pair of tweezers.

3. Use a Plunger
  1. Create a Seal: Place a sink plunger over the drain, ensuring there is enough water in the sink to cover the rubber cup of the plunger.
  2. Plunge the Drain: Push the plunger up and down several times, then quickly pull it off the drain. Repeat this process a few times to see if the blockage clears.

4. Try a Baking Soda and Vinegar Solution
  1. Prepare the Solution: Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar.
  2. Wait and Rinse: Let the solution sit for about 15-20 minutes. Afterward, pour boiling water down the drain to flush out the blockage.

5. Use a Drain Snake
  1. Insert the Snake: If the blockage persists, use a drain snake or plumber’s auger. Insert the snake into the drain and turn the handle to push it through the blockage.
  2. Remove the Blockage: Once you feel resistance, continue to turn the handle to break up or hook the blockage. Slowly pull the snake out and dispose of any debris.

6. Check the P-Trap
  1. Remove the P-Trap: Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water, then use a wrench to loosen the slip nuts on the P-trap (the curved pipe under the sink).
  2. Clean the P-Trap: Remove the P-trap and clear out any debris. Rinse the trap with water and reassemble it.

7. Use a Chemical Drain Cleaner (with caution)
  1. Follow Instructions: If other methods fail, you can use a chemical drain cleaner. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and use the cleaner in a well-ventilated area.
  2. Avoid Overuse: Chemical cleaners can damage pipes if used frequently. Use them sparingly and only as a last resort.

8. Prevent Future Blockages
  1. Avoid Pouring Grease Down the Drain: Grease can solidify and cause blockages. Dispose of it in the trash instead.
  2. Use a Drain Strainer: A drain strainer can catch food particles, hair, and other debris before they enter the pipes.
  3. Regular Maintenance: Periodically flush your drains with hot water or a baking soda and vinegar solution to prevent build-up.
