What Are General Troubleshooting Steps for Wi-Fi Internet?

Experiencing internet issues can be frustrating, but there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve common problems without reconfiguring any settings.

General Troubleshooting Steps

1. Check Your Connections
  1. Physical Connections: Ensure all cables and cords are securely connected to your modem, router, and computer. Loose or unplugged cables can often be the source of connectivity issues.
  2. Turn the Router On and Off: Turn off your router, wait for about 30 seconds, and then turn it back on. This process, known as power cycling, can help reset your connection.

2. Check Your Wi-Fi Settings
  1. Ensure Wi-Fi is Enabled: Make sure the WiFi on your device is turned on and that you are connected to the correct network.
  2. Move Closer to the Router: If you are far from the router, your device may not receive a strong signal. Move closer to the router to see if this improves your connection.

3. Restart Your Device
  1. Reboot Your Device: Restarting your computer, smartphone, or tablet can often resolve connectivity issues. This can clear any temporary glitches affecting your connection.

4. Check for Network Outages
  1. Internet Service Provider (ISP) Outages: Check if your ISP is experiencing outages in your area. You can usually find this information on their website or by contacting their support line.

5. Check Your Modem and Router
  1. Modem and Router Lights: Check the indicator lights on your modem and router. Refer to the user manual to understand what each light indicates. If you notice any unusual patterns (e.g., blinking red lights), there may be an issue with your hardware or connection.
  2. Firmware Updates: Ensure your modem and router have the latest firmware updates. Check the manufacturer's website for instructions on how to update your devices.

6. Test with a Different Device
  1. Use Another Device: Try connecting to the internet using a different device. If the second device connects successfully, the issue may be with your original device.

7. Check for Interference
  1. Minimise Interference: Other electronic devices, such as microwaves and cordless phones, can interfere with your Wi-Fi signal. Ensure your router is placed away from such devices.

Important Note
Please do not attempt to reconfigure the router or change any network settings. Doing so can affect other Occupants and cause further connectivity issues.
